The Huronia Stallions Varsity football team defeated the Cornwall Wildcats 27-0 to capture the East Conference Championship and advance to the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) championship game.
The Stallions played a complete game with 356 yards of total offence, solid special teams play, and a defensive shutout that included a near total shutdown of the Cornwall rushing attack. Cornwall only had one possession in the Huronia redzone and came away empty handed.
The Stallions were led on offence by the play of quarterback Justin Winn, receiver Christian Maciag, and runningback Michael Cassano.
Winn completed 10 passes in 16 attempts with two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and one interception. Cassano had 132 yards rushing and Maciag caught two touchdown passes.
The Stallions were led on defence by the pass rushing of Gavin Wallin and Aiden Alfieri who both registered quarterback sacks and had several qb pressures. Cornerback Josh Flindal had a key interception.
The Stallions improved to 10-0 on the season with the win and will look to complete an undefeated season against the 8-1-1 Brantford Bisons.
Brantford advanced to the final with a 20-17 victory over the Twin City Predators and pose a formidable challenge to the Stallions because they were the top scoring team in the OFC this season with 302 points in the regular season.
The Bisons are an excellent running team with a great offensive line and feature talented runningback Matt Clarke. The Stallions counter with a defence that yielded a league-low 53 points this year and an offence that has run hot and cold at different points in the season.
The Stallions are looking for their first Varsity championship since their inaugural season in 1993 when they finished 7-0. The game will be played this Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Oshawa Civic Recreation Complex as the feature game of the OFC’s championship triple header.
