The Peterborough Wolverines rep football teams opened the 2017 Ontario Football Conference (OFC) on the road with their longest trips of the season.
On Saturday both the Jr. Varsity and Sr. Varsity squads were in Sault Ste. Marie to face the newest entry in the OFC, the Sault Sabercats. The Jr. Varsity started the season with a convincing 57-21 win over the Sabercats and the Sr. Varsity followed with a 35-13 win in the nightcap.
On Sunday, the Wolverines Bantams travelled to Sarnia to battle the Sturgeons and lost 39-20 in a hard fought contest. The Wolverines started strong and lead 13-6 after the first quarter, however, the Sturgeons scored 21 points in the second quarter to take a 27-13 lead at the half. They scored late in the game to preserve their 39-20 victory.
Scoring for the Wolverines Jr. Varsity in their 57-21 win over the Sabercats were Kyle Milburn with three touchdowns, Mack McFarlane with two touchdowns and single touchdowns by Blaine Stevenson, Matt Emrich and Max Levasseur. Spencer Vesnaver converted on eight convert kicks.
The Jr. Varsity Wolverines will now prepare for their home opener Saturday when they host the Toronto Jr. Argos in a 2 p.m. contest at the TASSS Field.
Scoring for the Wolverines Sr. Varsity in their 35-13 win over the Sabercats were Nick Clarkin with three touchdowns and single touchdowns by Matthew Funk and Keegan Crough. Tyson Jeffery converted on three convert kicks and added a 24-yard field goal. The Wolverines defence recorded a team safety. The Sr. Varsity squad will open their home schedule when they host the Nipissing Wild from North Bay in a 5 p.m. game this Saturday at TASSS.
In the Bantam game against the Sarnia Sturgeons the Wolverines scoring was by Jamie Hubble with two touchdowns and Carson Harvey with a single touchdown. Hayden McLlmoyle converted on two convert kicks. The Bantams will also open at home this Saturday when they host the Toronto Jr. Argos in the 11 a.m. game of the Wolverines triple header at TASSS.
